Bench press on a table

In 1948 Buster McShane went to London to see John Grimek win the Mr. Universe title over Steve Reeves.

When Buster came back he opened his first gym in Belfast which I joined. Previous to this I had worked out, no bench, on a wooden table.

Buster, later on, trained Mary Peters to win an Olympic gold medal. Buster is on record for benching 500 lbs. at a bodyweight of 150.

I was an interprovincial cricket player, rugby and table tennis and handball.

Weight training was very basic, with 3 sets of 10 reps following Bob Hoffman H&S.

Later on, after I came to the USA I corresponded with John Grimek.

I am 90 years old, take no medication, drive 400 miles weekly and still work 40 hrs.

My current schedule is patterned after the Body by Science philosophy..one set to failure: 5 exercises:2x weekly. My current weight is 167.

I credit my good health to a large extent on my training. I also try to follow a protocol developed by a Dr. Kauffmann on longevity which augments the benefits of my weight training.
